When the war in Ukraine started we were heartbroken and felt helpless as we stood by watching the horrors unfold on the news. But then we understood that hundreds and thousands of Ukrainian Jews would be immigrating to Israel, starting their lives over here. And they started coming… only with the clothes on their backs. Having to leave everything behind, no time to sell their cars or apartment, if they owned one. Most people in Ukraine do not have savings as they live from paycheck to paycheck. So they also arrive here with no money to find themselves at the mercy of Israel.
While Israel does help the new immigrants with the initial temporary house and then a stipend to help pay for their rent once they found an apartment, it is minimal and doesn’t last more than a year. And certainly not enough to furnish an apartment and buy appliances as most apartments are rented empty. That is when we started the initiative “House into a Home” and with the help of generous donors, we are able to furnish these new immigrants apartments!!! We purchase for them all essential furniture, beds, closets, sofas, kitchen tables, fridges, washing machines, ovens, and more!
On top of “House into a Home”, we have our distribution center where we are providing clothing, shoes, bedding, kitchen supplies, mattresses, and many other things. Every week we are able to help over 50 people coming to the distributing center!
Many of us here at, the Generous Basket project, are immigrants ourselves and understand that it is not an easy process to reestablish yourself here in the land. Especially if you do not speak Hebrew or English. So we are taking people by the hand, and showing them how to open a bank account and get health insurance, finding them realtors. We wanted to make their transition as smooth as possible.
What an opportunity we have to help these Ukrainians who were cast out of their country by hate, and are now greeted in Israel by love.
